Learn About Floorball

Floorball is a fast-paced, indoor team sport similar to hockey—but played on foot with lightweight sticks and a plastic ball. It’s easy to learn, low-impact, and designed for all ages and skill levels. No skates, checking, or expensive gear needed.

We like to think of it as a mix of hockey, basketball, soccer, and lacrosse—fast, skill-based, and super fun.

A Quick History

Floorball began in the 60s and 70s in Sweden and Finland as a hockey training game. It quickly evolved into a sport of its own, with official rules, organized leagues, and the formation of the International Floorball Federation (IFF) in 1986. It’s now played in over 70 countries and recognized by the IOC.

The sport arrived in the U.S. in the early 2000s and gained traction through grassroots efforts, school programs, and local clubs. USA Floorball was founded in 2002, helping teams compete internationally. From 2006 to 2009, the U.S. Men’s Team earned global respect on the world stage.

Despite setbacks during COVID, the sport is rebuilding fast—with Richmond leading the charge on the East Coast.

Floorball in the U.S.

Richmond is one of the most active floorball cities in the U.S. RFC was formed to bring local players together and grow the sport through leagues, clinics, and school outreach. Thanks to our partnership with the Powhatan Ice Den, we’re bringing youth floorball back to the region for the first time in four years.

Our goal is to build an inclusive, competitive community—and help lead the national comeback.
