Melissa Chase Tries Floorball with Richmond Floorball Club
Richmond Floorball Club recently had a chance to introduce the sport to a wider local audience when Melissa Chase and WRIC’s Showcase stopped by to see what floorball is all about.
For most people in Richmond, floorball is still something new. It usually gets described as a mix of hockey and soccer, but that only goes so far. The easiest way to understand it is to actually step on the court, pick up a stick, and try it.
Melissa Chase took on the role most new players find themselves in at the beginning — figuring out how the stick feels, how the ball moves, and how quickly the game starts to speed up once play begins. It’s a learning curve, but it’s also what makes the sport approachable. You don’t need a long background in it to get involved.
For Richmond Floorball Club, opportunities like this are important because they help make the sport more visible and easier to understand. A lot of the club’s growth comes from moments like this — someone seeing the game for the first time, getting a basic introduction, and realizing it’s something they could actually try.
The WRIC feature gave people a look at that first step.
It showed what floorball looks like at the beginning, before anyone has it fully figured out, which is exactly where most players start. And that’s part of the appeal. It’s a sport you can learn as you go, with just enough structure to get started and enough pace to keep people coming back.
As floorball continues to grow in Richmond, that kind of introduction matters. The more people see it, the easier it becomes to understand, and the more likely they are to step onto the court themselves.
